Your Next Step

I want to talk to you about your next step. We currently find ourselves in unprecedented times, with the world suffering from the impact and effects of a virus (COVID-19) that has caused countries to close their boarders, the medical field to stretch beyond its capacity, and the stock market to close trading multiple times due to dramatic drops. People are losing their lives at an alarming rate to a virus that currently has no cure and no vaccine. People are panicked, worried, stressed, and, of all things, stockpiling toilet paper. In many respects, it seems as though the world has gone mad.

In a world filled with uncertainty, you may be wondering why I want to talk to you about your next step. You may be thinking that you can’t think about your next step because you’re consumed with what is happening in the world right now. Well, my friends, I want to talk to you about your next step, because our current world situation is only temporary. This too shall pass. And quite frankly, many of us have more time on our hands right now than we ever have before. So, what else are you going to do with that extra time? Spend it binge-watching Netflix? Spend it worried about things that are beyond your control? You can do that if you want, but how does that get you any closer to accomplishing your goals?

Strategy is more important than ever right now. You have time, you have opportunity, so why not focus on your next step instead of wasting this time and opportunity on things that are not going to move you forward?

I will repeat here that strategy is important; but you don’t have to know the entire plan before you decide to make a move. The key is to identify and focus on your next step, on the next right move for you. Understand that your next step looks different from someone else’s next step, even if your end goal is the same. You are unique and your situation and circumstances are unique to you. Just like your natural talents and abilities and learned skills.

So, what does the next step look like for you?

  • If you want to lose weight, it could look like buying a gym bag and committing to the three days each week you’re going to work out.
  • If you want to open your own business, it could look like identifying a coach to help you walk through the process.
  • If you want to write a book, it could look like sitting down and brainstorming chapter ideas or writing your outline.

The next step looks different for everyone because we all have different goals and dreams that we want to achieve for our lives. So it’s important to focus on YOUR next step, not the next step that someone else is taking, even if you are working toward the same end result.

But what if you’re feeling like you’re totally and completely lost, and you don’t have any goals defined, you don’t have any focus points, you’re just drifting right now and unsure of how to get on a path?

If you find yourself in that space, then take the time to sit down and be still and think about one thing you can do that would have a positive effect on your life. One small thing, one baby step. Make one decision today that feels right to you. Drink more water. Commit to journaling every day until your thoughts start to show you a path that feels right to you. Spend 5 minutes in gratitude.

It isn’t important where you start, only that you start. You will never reach the finish line of any goal, dream, or accomplishment if you don’t start the journey. Just focus on your next step and keep moving forward, one step at a time.
